Giant Beach Ball

Posted by aleeCO on July 22, 2011 in References

I know this isn’t great for a ball reference video, but it’s pretty entertaining.  Gisel Calvo shared it :)   I’m not sure what I like better:  the fact that there’s a giant, random beach ball being dropped in Dallas or the people’s commentary.  I especially like the lone “Yay…” *clap clap* when the ball hits the ground  :p

Strawberry Air Freshener

Posted by aleeCO on July 21, 2011 in Going-Ons

Today I went to Pixar to get Lotso and say hello to a friend. I wanted to note this visit because when I was there I ran into a few other AMer’s…just was a reminder of how small of a world this is! It was a pleasant surprise. By the way, Lotso really does smell like strawberries ;)

Trajectory

Posted by aleeCO on July 20, 2011 in References

Jan-Marc Heckman shared this with me — good trajectory reference:

I can explain the graph in non-math terms ;) I use it as a reference to make sure the arcs are decreasing correctly. As long as you understand the basic patterns of the bounces, you don’t have to worry so much about the math behind it. Here are the main points to keep in mind:

-If the ball is heavier the height in each successive arc will be significantly less, and there will be less bounces. The heavier the ball, the more drastic the decrease and fewer bounces.
-if the ball is lighter, the height in each successive arc will decrease slightly and there will be more bounces. The lighter the ball, the least noticeable the decrease is in each successive bounce.
-For both heavy and light balls, the arcs are round. So the graphs will look similar, it’s just a matter of a change in spacing and arc frequency.
-Regardless if something is heavy or light, everything falls at the same speed. What makes something stay in the air is air resistance. Lighter balls (like a beach ball) have more hang time than say a bowling ball. So, in terms of the graph, the arcs look more stretched out, since the ball is in the air longer.

Here we go!  Revision 1!  (first pass was last night)

This week is about weight and how different materials behave

Week 3 Revisions

Posted by aleeCO on July 18, 2011 in Animations, Poses

For the animation: I focused on spacing to clean up the animation. Helped to refer to Peer’s tick marks in his draw-overs. There were some other little spots to fix as well such as the heights of the arcs and spots the ball was sliding.

For the pose, I varying the height of the shoulders and elbows to break up the twinning, and the angle of the bent hands (twinning is when parts of a pose mirror each other). I also changed the angle of the present and camera for the composition.

Critique week 3

Posted by aleeCO on July 17, 2011 in Q&A's

The critique with Peer Lemmers gave me a better understanding of the concept of spacing. He gave me some great tid bits to think about — really helped watching him go through frame by frame and draw on the screen. I’m actually glad we’re going into such depth with bounce animations — makes it easier to understand and solidify the essential concepts and principles.

I’ll be making tweaks to all of my critiqued works, so they’ll be tighter for my progress reel in the fall. I’m picking up so many little things from the mentors (both Peer and others), other AMers, alumni, and others currently working in studios. And, oh let me tell you, how important the small things and insights are!

Week 3 submissions

Tweaked the works again! It truly is about the little things. A small tweak in can really change how the piece reads
